Performance Guide: This etude provides an opportunity to show a musical understanding of musical space. The glissando passages should have a wide dynamic range, be varied and pensive, and transition smoothly. Let the right hand work for you and do not be tempted to “loosen up” when playing the passage. The right hand should not feel hurried or forced. The lines should be clear, melodic, and fully sustained to allow the right hand to “shine.” In the development section, m. 22, take the note G-natural to the low C-natural and then from there to the C-natural. This note is a dramatic turn and should be played using rubato. The accents on the last beat of m. 22 should be played gently and with an unforced expression. Instead of using your hand to play the note, imagine a bright glow of light coming from your fingertips and the base of your hand. This light will make the note ring out clearly. In m. 25, play the note C-natural slightly higher than the note F-natural as you transition into the C-natural in beat 2. Be sure to breathe in a powerful and full way as you play the note C-natural and F-natural in beat 1. Continue breathing in a powerful way as the note D-sharp and B-natural in beat 3. As you breathe out, play the last note D-sharp in a light and gentle way. These notes should be played with great clarity and softness of sound so that they are really heard.
Performance Guide: This etude provides an opportunity to show rhythm, rhythmic dexterity, musical space, and an understanding of a wide dynamic range. The first section (m. 8 - 26) is an accented glissando that combines the dynamics of the French horns and the contrast of the upper and lower registers. The glissando should be used to highlight the progressions, rather than playing it too short. The line should be played with a steady, pensive, and intent expression. 827ec27edc
