The low-budget action-crime thriller Malone is not a Canadian film. It was shot in Toronto, and the majority of its funding came from foreign sources. The director and writer, Mark Malone, is Canadian, and the majority of the cast and crew were Canadian.
Burt Kwouk, an experienced British actor, who appeared in The Big Steal was seen walking around the set wearing a red leather jacket with a bulletproof vest over it. Later, in the final scene, he took off the vest and stood on the ledge of the building, exposing his bulletproof vest to the camera. This was an extremely tasteless and clumsy way to have the audience clap an actor for a great performance. No producer of a serious drama should have permitted such a thing.
Malone tells a classic whodunnit story. It is based on a true story of a killer who was sent to prison for the murder of his girlfriend. While in prison, he killed his cellmate and then his cell guard. By the time he was sent to prison, he had been convicted of multiple murders, and the police were sure he would go on to kill again. The cell guard was an actor, and he was hired to play the cellmate in the film, so that the cell guard could be killed. Malone was made for US TV, but it was shown in Canada. Most of the filming was done in Toronto, but much of the work was done in Halifax. Malone was condemned by reviewers, because it was too grim and that it wasn't suitable for TV. It was heavily edited for TV, and its original TV opening title was replaced with a different title. The TV version of Malone had a very different message. It was also shown on the USA series 827ec27edc
